BACKGROUND

Information: Cathy Dark, teacher of European, Mexican, Romanian, American Clog, and international dance.


Cathy L. Dark is an international folk dance teacher from Oregon State University where she is a Senior Instructor.

She was educated at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance and received her Master's Degree in January of 1988 from Goldsmith's College, University of London, England. She received her B.S. in Dance from the University of Oregon and her B.A. in Home Economics from Central Washington State College.

Cathy was Artistic Director, Choreographer, Administrator, and Tour Director of the Spokane Silver Spurs from 1978 to 1984 and 1987 to 1990.

She received the 1996 Dance Educator of the Year from the Northwest District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD).

She has been the featured teacher at the Corvallis Hoolyeh Folk Dance Festival and Director of Opening Ceremonies for the Spokane Goodwill Games; has choreographed for the Spokane Symphony; was Director of the Folk Schastye Ensemble (which she established) on its goodwill tour to Russia; and established Spokane's Bigfoot Recreational Folk Dance Group.

She has been the Dance Vice President of the Northwest District of AAHPERD.

Cathy has been a member of the Erdely Folk Troup (authentic Transylvanian dances), and guest instructor at the Richland Festival, Spokane Folklore Society, the Walla Walla Cajun Dance Workshop, The Seattle Camp Wanna Dance, the Washington State University Romanian Dance Workshop, the Seattle Swing Dance, the Walla Walla Swing Dance, the Lady of the Lake (Idaho) Swing Dance, the Seattle Folk Dance Festival (Romanian dance), the Vancouver (B.C. Canada) Romanian Dance, the University of Manchester Nottingham Folk Dance Club. She performed with the Mustafer Band at the International Music and Dance Festival in Berlin (West Germany) and with the Half-a-Chance Dance Company.

With Anne M. Pittman and Marlys S. Waller, she wrote the revised edition of the book Dance a While: A Handbook for Folk, Square, Contra, and Social Dance.
